About Mike Smart
Mike spent 40 years as a professional geologist, preparing to sail into the arts.
He has travelled extensively in rural Southern Africa, experiencing the rich diversity of terrain, ecosystems and cultures. He started painting in his spare time about 14 years ago. Retirement in 2017 gifted much more opportunity to interact with the rich Western Cape talent via workshops and painting outings. Building mind pictures of the earth and its processes is second nature to Mike. His aptitude for landscape art was born crawling across, mapping and describing rocks. Also following water paths through the landscape, to find the link to ecosystem needs.
Art provides a conduit for Mike to celebrate the road he has travelled. It has released him from the confines of scientific rigor and a corporate environment. His paintings illuminate Creation – nature, wide open spaces and ultimately freedom.
